Google Custom Search Engine on Your Blog

Google announced the global release of Google Custom Search. What is Google Custom Search? It's a way to make your own custom search engine. You could customize it to search only your own Web site, or you could customize it to search the Web for certain topics or items. This is what DiggTorrents does for Torrent files.

Google Custom Search Engine comes in two flavors, the free ad-sponsored variety and the not-so-free Business Edition, which allows you to remove all the Google branding and ads. The UK Parliament uses Google Custom Search Business Edition, and the only reason I know that is that Google pointed it out in their blog.

Using Google as your Web site's search engine is a pretty smart move. It's probably cheaper to pay for the Business Edition than it is to hire a programmer to write and maintain a search engine for a large Web site.

You can now add a custom search gadget to your Blogger blog. The Search Box gadget can be customized to search your blog, pages you've linked to from your blog, your blog roll, and the Web in general.

Why is this important? I've maintained many blogs over the years, but I'm not always consistent with tagging them, and the categories I use may not make sense to other people. Searching through entries is an obvious solution. Results from your Search Box searches appear inline with your blog entries and match your blog's color scheme.
